Mission of IMD

The mission of the Institute of Music & Dance (IMD), a year-round school of the arts at Marygrove College, is to provide students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds with high quality, developmentally appropriate programs in music, dance, theater and visual arts. The purpose of the IMD is to nurture and harness creativity, foster discipline, strengthen technical and performance skills, heighten artistic awareness, and encourage a lifelong interest in the arts.

Through mentoring in weekly classes as well as through visiting artists and outreach programming, IMD continues to provide role models who can speak to being artists/entertainers, educators and concerned individuals who work to enhance their community, through their art, and thus make a mark on the world.

Originally Founded in 1914 as the Detroit Institute of Musical Arts. Member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education. The Institute of Music & Dance is funded in part by the Erb Family Foundation, Hudson Webber Foundation, Kresge Foundation, Carrie E. Schuyler Estate Trust, and the James and Lynelle Holden Fund.
